HNY

Some journeys ended
Some journeys started
Some destinations reached
Some destinations decided
Some things forgotten
Some things forgiven
Some things forsaken
Some things remembered
Some things taken under stride
Some things strived

and with all those things behind a new year has arrived...

happy new year.

An evening with Art

its a day or two late in writing about this event but as they say better late than never....it was friday again and i was clear in my mind what i was going to do this friday evening...it was India Art Festival ( 19th - 22nd Dec, 11 am to 7.30 pm) at Nehru Center, Discovery of India building, Worli, Mumbai....with more than 500 artists presenting their work, it was going to be a visual treat...
hoping on to the train at Churchgate, I got down at Mahalaxmi and got into a taxi to head towards the majestic Nehru Center.

Nehru center - Discovery of India Building

The design of the building has its own charm - its kind of a mesh which spirals up towards the sky...The campus is also home to Nehru planetarium...but today my eyes were fixed on galaxy of artists...

As i entered the building i was greeted by hundreds of paintings displayed along the walls of ground floor and i got the hint of what to expect in next two three hours. The best part was my friend and upcoming abstract artist in mumbai circles - Rahul Inamdar, had his stall put up at the festival too. well that meant I had my VIP passes ready for me ;) ( as you see it helps to have connections at the right places :D )

as my buddy guided me through maze of stalls, i got a fleeting glance of art from all the corners of India...from rajasthan to west bengal, from assam to mumbai...

we first headed towards Rahul's stall...and boom!!! didnt he do the arrangement in perfect way...i felt as if the sun just shined in front of me...

Rahul Inamdar's exhibit

The theme of his exhibit is "Space"... that space within us where we are cozy with ourselves and when in contact with it we dont need any thing from the outerworld...the lighting was perfect and it was the best arrangement of stall in the whole set-up, leaving ample "space" for the visitors to actually get dissolve in the space o f
p a  i   n     t        i          n               g                   s              .              .              .

after reaching at stall, we had impromptu evening snacks - coffee n some nice cheese sandwiches...with my hunger pangs satiated...i started out to douse my artistic hunger by going around the stalls...

what i saw left me amazed...some of the artists had created some wonderful piece of art...putting their heart n soul on canvas...most the paintings were figurative but what caught my eye were abstract paintings...i specially have liking towards abstract paintings...abstract painting has a life of its own and takes on it own character...to put it in perspective, at a recently conducted painting's auction conducted by world famous Christie's auction house, an abstract painting by world renowned artist Vasudev S Gaitonde sold for a whopping 20.5 crores...phewww...leaves u breathless ain't it...

well as i meandered through the exhibition i lost my track of time only to realise that it was end of day's play...the clock has struck 7.30 pm and it was time to wind-up...but in my heart it was still "Yeh Dil Maange More!!!" just when Rahul said - 'how about another exhibition?' well those words were music to my ears...i was like "neki aur puch puch" and lo we headed towards another exhibition of abstractionist Prabhakar Barwe...

The Prabhakar Barwe Retrospective is held at Percept Art, Raghuvanshi Estate Compound, Lower Parel (W) until 28th Feb 2014...it is exhibition of Barwe's works from 1955-1995...some of the paintings are on loan from private collectors while some of the never-seen-before paintings are from artist family's collection...

some of the works are simply fabulous...and such is gravity of some of the paintings that one can end up spending hours standing in front of a single painting...and then that made me realise the might of Barwe...to put in perspective i watched paintings of atleast 50 artists at art festival in two hours whereas here two hours were not enough even for half of Barwe's paintings...truly an enriching experience...it was 9.15 and as the realities of outer world brought us back to our senses, we left the Barwe's world with an eerie sense of incompleteness only to yearn for one more visit....

Title : Balance

Clinging for HOPE

Am travelling in train...first class compartment...its byculla and jst as the train catches speed...a lady hops in...a second look and I realise she's holding a baby too... An elderly guy gives her a stare as if admonishing...stare ignored...the lady gets down to work...starts sweeping the floor...I look for the kid..
What I see moves me...the mother has left the kid on the seat and while she goes about doing her chore...the kid at that age, while clinging onto that cold steel handle, has already learnt the lesson of life - art of balancing

Keep Walking - Keep Trying!!!

life is all about learning and unlearning and learning new...we learn, we apply, we re-inforce the learning...it's one ongoing process.

well it got re-inforced for me today in a pressure situation!!!

situation : mom and dad will be travelling by tomorrow morning's train...the tickets are still wait-listed...the next best possible alternative - u guessed it right - TATKAL booking.

with all the grit and determination and ofcourse HOPE, at 10 o'clock dot...i logged into irctc.co.in - online ticketing portal for Indian railways. the website is work of genius and handles online reservation for Indian raliways pan-India. and it is this exact fact that makes it worth writing blog on this...

the issue is that at 10 o'clock sharp, the site is subjected to pan-india drone attack. As if all the people who are waiting for their chance to get seat in train making rush for the reservation. It's like Agent Smith having a go at Neo from all the directions...

the result is - site loading at snails pace...now what makes it more thrilling and exciting is that - though ur site is getting loaded slow...the tickets are flying high...as if mad-rush for christmas sale...Much to my delight and elation, the page where one enters the booking details pops-up in front of me...after entering the details frantically, i click the "Make Payment" button. thankfully the site moves ahead where it asks me to enter credit card details...i do the needful and hit "BUY" button...such is crunch situation, even the rotations of time clock seems slow...and bingo i get a big message which roughly translates as "Unable to BOOK the tickets"

"aarrrgh" i once again embark on a long journey of starting from scratch...follow the same process..enter the details...make payment and kaboom!!! "unable to book"

meanwhile the tickets are not waiting for me...the seats are now down to 6 from 11...i am reminded of childhood story of "The King and The Spider"...try, try but don cry...well i would like to re-christened it as "KEEP TRYING" on lines of Johnnie Walker. yes, u guessed it write,'KEEP WALKING'...

i keep trying and after 6 unsuccessful attempts, i hit the jackpot...."TRINGGGGGGGGGG" i get the most awaited message from IRCTC..."Transaction Successful"...tickets booked...wat makes it more wonderful is that even IRCTC recognises this hardwork :D , as they themselves post the message of "Congratulations! You have successfully booked a ticket."

well, life has its own way of making you learn new things, the idea is to be patient and

"Keep Walking - Keep Trying"

Main beete hue kaal ko chhod aaya.
                                          gum ke andheron mein doobi,
Main waha apni shaam chhod aaya"

Dashavatar

Many a times I've wondered how the traditions n folklore get passed on to next generation.I got my answer yesterday.I was at annual mela(fun fair) celebrating the divineness of lord rameshwar, the presiding deity of vengurla city.
It was around half past midnight when, after the palaquin procession of lord rameshwar ended, a play in local language started. They call it as 'Dashavatar' - literally translated as play of 'dash' ( ten ) + 'avatars' ( incarnations) of lord Vishnu...the play has all the elements of entertainment - drama, thrill, suspense, intense emotions and action. Until the TV was introduced to my native play, the dashavatar plays were prominent source of entertainment for the local people. These dashavatar plays are adaptations of mythological stories and local folklore that are based on the hindu deities like Lord Mahadev, Vishnu, Goddess Durga, Kali etc.

Characters playing Goddess Vajreshwari, Lord Shankar and other mythological characters.

Actors playing characters of Demon Vajrasura and lady protagonist

Actor playing Lord Shankar

Actors playing charaters of sage Narad Muni(standing) and Demon Kalika(sitting on stage)

The actors in these plays are local people who are mostly farmers and act in these plays out of passion. It is said and I was amazed by the fact that the script for the play on that particular day is decided on then n there and there are no special practice sessions.
It is through these plays that most of the tradional values and folklore are passed on from generations to generations keeping alive the local traditions and keeping intact the social fabric...truly wonderful and incredible ways of the land that they call - India!
